Portable Bluetooth speakers are one of the most cost-effective ways to fill a room or pool party with music, which many of us will be doing in the coming weeks. When it comes to party speakers, it’s all about delivering big sound, and the Sony ULT Field 7 excels in this area. The speaker’s standout feature is its ability to maintain clarity even with plenty of bass.

Sony ULT Field 7: Designed for Parties

The Sony ULT Field 7 is a medium-sized Bluetooth speaker specifically designed for parties. It delivers powerful sound, deep bass, and a festive atmosphere, enhanced by its built-in RGB lighting effects. Weighing around 6.3 kg, it has a cylindrical design with rubberized end caps that feature built-in handles, making it easy to move around. The speaker can be positioned either vertically or horizontally, with rubberized feet to keep it stable in the horizontal position.

On either side of the speaker, passive radiators contribute to the overall low-frequency output. The top of the speaker includes dedicated control buttons for power, pairing, track control, volume, and the ULT mode. A nice touch is the backlighting on the ULT mode button, which matches the lighting on the passive radiators. However, the volume buttons require multiple presses for small adjustments, a minor inconvenience that might be addressed in a future firmware update.

The speaker features a mesh-fabric finish that looks good, even though the music is projected in one direction. At the back of the speaker, there’s a well-designed compartment. Removing the cover reveals controls for battery percentage, a USB input for connecting audio sources (and charging external devices), and an input for connecting a guitar or microphone. Once a guitar or microphone is connected, the gain control becomes active, and there’s also an echo button to add a reverb effect. A cool feature is the ‘key control system,’ which allows you to change the key of the music while maintaining the original tempo.

The Sony ULT Field 7 is IP67 rated, making it perfect for pool parties.

Big Sounds with the Sony ULT Field 7

No matter where you use the speaker, its sound field optimization feature ensures peak performance. This allows the speaker to listen to itself and adjust its sound settings on the fly, tailoring its output to the environment.

The speaker also offers a light show, with several options available through the Sony companion app. Additionally, the speaker is compatible with the Sony Fiestable app, which provides some DJ controls. While not the best option, it’s fun for a party, especially after the crowd has had a few drinks.

Sony’s X-balanced speaker design gives the ULT Field 7 a good deal of fullness and richness, ensuring the sound fills the room. In terms of codecs, the speaker supports SBC, AAC, and LDAC, and it offers multi-point connectivity. The ULT (Ultimate Bass) button is the magic button on the speaker. It has two levels: ULT 1 for a bass-focused audio experience and ULT 2 for a power-focused audio experience. Both ULT modes provide substantial sub-bass and a nice balance of sound, making this speaker ideal for party music like Daft Punk and Haddaway rather than classical pieces.

The speaker can get very loud. However, at higher volumes, you might notice some compression, so it’s best to keep it at 70-85% volume. The single input jack allows you to connect either a guitar or a microphone, making it great for karaoke. However, you can’t connect both simultaneously. The Party Connect feature allows you to pair multiple speakers—up to 100—so they all work together, amplifying the sound for larger gatherings.

Should You Buy It?

The Sony ULT Field 7 offers around 30 hours of audio playback with the lights and ULT mode on, provided you keep the volume in check. If you max out the volume, the battery life will decrease. A more realistic figure would be 10-12 hours of playback with the volume at 50%, lights on, and ULT mode active. A quick 10-hour recharge provides about three hours of listening time.

With monsoon parties on the horizon, the ULT button is ready to keep the party going with booming sounds on the Sony ULT Field 7. This speaker not only meets the expectations of partygoers but also ensures that the music quality remains high, regardless of the environment. Whether you’re hosting a small get-together or a large party, the Sony ULT Field 7 is a great choice for delivering powerful and clear sound, enhanced by a vibrant light show.
