Setting It Up
Setting up the BenQ W5800 requires two people to handle the device safely. It comes in double-box packaging, and its industrial design is impressive once placed on a table. The setup process should be done carefully, and if your table lacks space, ceiling installation might be necessary. The BenQ W5800 features motorized zoom, shift, and focus.
It supports 4K UHD at 120Hz, making it ideal for high-frame-rate video games. It has a 1.6x optical zoom lens in the center, with air flow intakes on either side, and all ports and manual controls at the back. The ports include two HDMI inputs (one with audio return support), a USB Type-A for media, an RS232 port, an RJ-45 LAN port, an audio port, and two IR receiver ports.
Color Accuracy and Performance
The mid-mounted all-glass lens minimizes chromatic aberration, enhancing contrast and clarity. The BenQ W5800’s color accuracy is remarkable, offering sharp pictures with natural colors right out of the box. It uses a laser light source to produce 2600 ANSI lumens and can project up to 200-inch pictures accurately. Users can select between 16:9 and 2.35:1 aspect ratios. Despite projecting onto an almost white wall instead of a screen, the projection remains bright with excellent color quality. The projector offers 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, ensuring accurate color representation for most content.
The BenQ W5800’s 100% DCI-P3 coverage is 1.3 times wider than 100% Rec. 709 and covers 76% of the UHDTV BT.2020 standard, resulting in superior color mapping compared to Rec. 709 projectors. This ensures accurate color reproduction for all 4K HDR content. BenQ’s CinematicColor technology ensures each W5800 unit is calibrated with an optimal DCI-P3 color table for guaranteed color accuracy.
The user interface is simple, making it easy to use. The projector delivers the necessary detail and brightness to cast a sharp image on a large screen (up to 120 inches), ideally paired with a high-quality projection screen.
Viewing Experience
Watching films with bright and dark scenes is a pleasure. BenQ’s HDR-PRO technology combines blue laser hardware with light control technology and Dynamic Black software to optimize contrast dynamically, enhancing details in dark shadows and preventing washout in bright scenes. The Local Contrast Enhancer is another notable feature, using an advanced algorithm to enhance the contrast ratio for 4K HDR movies. It adjusts the gamma for different zones within the picture independently, preserving details in both dark and bright areas and enriching the depth of the 4K HDR image. A calibration report is included in the box.
Should You Buy It?
The 4K image is clear and detailed, making movies like “Dune” and “Justice League” look crisp on a large screen. The 120Hz refresh rate improves motion clarity for sports and gaming. While the BenQ W5800 lacks built-in speakers, it is designed for home theaters where a good sound system is expected. Cinephiles will be continually impressed by the color accuracy and sharpness of the images.
